This year I had several AI related ideas for creating my ”traditional” Christmas greeting. They included everything from a mixed art idea with automatic video and music creation including character acting at front of a green screen to animation creation with AI. Then came the covid-19 and I found myself running out of time with other life related things. So, instead I decided to do a web Christmas Card with AI and Gimp.
The one I chose is generated by Dreamstudio.
There are four things to consider when using AI as an image creation platform:
- AI generates images based on free and nonfree images found from the internet. One can argue that AI images are ”stolen” art and one can argue that they are not.
- AI generated images can and do compete with real talented artists and creators.
- AI can be used to violate brands and trademarks of established artists and creators – in worst cases they are used to create ”fakes”.
- You own and don’t own the end result. The AI is the creative artist here and you are the client – depending of the software / application owner your rights concerning the end result will vary.
Although you are not the artist with the AI apps there are various of skills required and skill levels obtained in image creation with these tools. Almost all of the software is based in large language models who translate your order / wish to something that the image creation engine can use to produce the image. The language you use to describe your wish is supposed to be spoken (actually written) language but in practice it has quirks and nuances that you need to learn to obtain better results. Then there are options and parameters that you can set to enchance the result and manipulate the image creation engine. In short the images I create are not the ones a skilled user of these tools could create. Ordering something from an engine is called prompting.
Here is the prompt I used:
cartoon style, red headed witch queen doing christmas tarot reading, christmas tree and presents and background
As you can see I have made a typo on the prompt.
The result I hated the most belongs to Craiyon.

I don’t recognize myself but I like the Elvira style of sleeves.
Deepdream is something that demonstrates how little the engines / ais behind the app actually understand what they are doing.

My long time favorite and the only one I’m currently paying to use for is Midjourney.

It has a cousin called Fulljourney. I really like the tarot cards in this one and it also did a very crude ”animation” as well.

I had a hard time to decide between Leonardo and Dreamstudio.

Limewire has several engines as have some of other services I used. This one is with Blue Willow engine.

Microsoft has it’s own engine based on tech by several others. I like the huge anime eyes. Tarot cards aren’t.

The last one I tried is called Playground.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2024!
